"The Asian American Jazz Festival, now entering its fourth year, is the oldest continuous jazz festival in San Francisco. The Asian American Jazz Festival developed out of the extensive activity of the Asian American musicians and composers in the San Francisco Bay Area. The 1981 festival was dedicated to the history of Asian American participation in jazz. The 1982 festival explored the elements of music that are uniquely Asian and American by presenting both traditional Asian music and the new music of contemporary Asian American musicians and composers. The 1983 festival celebrated the diversity of styles and influences that the Asian American musician has made his/her own. This year's Asian American Jazz Festival focuses on the contributions of Filipino musicians to jazz from the '30s through the '50s and onward." (Text taken from original 1984 program brochure.)
